Hey fellow anime lovers!
How are you all doing lately? I've been picking up extra hours at work again and if I'm not working I've been trying to get through some books I've been wanting to read and working on my artwork. Since one of the books I managed to get my hands on from the library recently is perfect for my fellow nerds I figured I'd share.
So I found this little gem at the book store, but couldn't afford to buy it at the time so I took a journey to the library. I encourage you all to check it out.
Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy: A Handbook for Girl Geeks (currently 15.95 where I work, you may find it cheaper elsewhere)
Author: Sam Maggs
What is it?: It's a book mainly for Fangirls of any genre and some great tips about making nerdy friends, places and sites to help you get connected, tackling conventions, and feminism.
My opinion: On the whole this is a good book to check out if you're first stepping into an aspect of wonderful nerdom whether it be Anime, Video Games, Books, whichever group you come from. There were a lot of good tips about how to connect with other people in your fandom, I especially liked the links that she had to help people who are in areas where there are fewer fangirls or fanboys. It is a bit more female oriented, but guys could definitely read it and get some good tips as well. There was plenty of advice for fan fiction writing, some of the general terms that are related to different fandoms, cosplaying, and how to prepare for the conventions. There are also short interviews that are fun to read. I will admit that for me personally since I've been to conventions and have been a big fan of the anime fandom for awhile now, that a lot of what she shared were things that I have personally learned through trial and error with time. Despite that there were a few jewels of wisdom that even I hadn't thought of- such as creating a business style card with your sites and and information for when you run into fellow congoers you would like to become better friends with so you're not having to rewrite your information out for people over and over again. I definitely recommend this book to those of you who are beginners into the world of geeks and nerds. Don't be afraid to check it out if your a pro yourself, you may learn something you may not have thought of as well!
So check out your local library, book store, or check online for a copy of this book. It's worth a read!
